What Do I Pay My Nanny?

By Chelsea Delaney, Founder of Nannies in the City

Let’s talk about it, because I know this topic can be confusing, uncomfortable, or even overwhelming for a lot of families.

I’ve been in this industry for 14 years. I started as a full-time nanny, and now I run a boutique agency that works with families all over DC, Maryland, and Virginia. I’ve sat on both sides of the table—I've been the nanny negotiating pay and the agency owner helping families understand what quality care actually costs in this area.

Nanny rates in the DMV typically range from $28–$40+ per hour.

That’s the going rate right now for experienced, professional caregivers in this region. And yes, I know that might sound like a lot, because it is. It’s also a reflection of what it costs to live here, and what it takes to attract and retain someone who is truly seasoned, reliable, and skilled in caring for children.

Here’s what that rate usually reflects:

  • Experience: Someone with 10+ years of childcare, newborns, multiples, or special needs isn’t going to charge entry-level pay. These nannies come in ready, no hand-holding, no guesswork.

  • Education and training: Many of the nannies we work with have degrees in early childhood education, are CPR/First Aid certified, have doula or newborn care training, and stay up to date on developmentally appropriate care.

  • What’s expected of them: We’re not just talking about playing with the baby. A family assistant or nanny might manage daily routines, prep meals, handle pickups/drop-offs, help with laundry, plan sensory play, manage sleep schedules, and more.

  • Location and hours: Full-time roles in high-cost areas like DC, Arlington, Bethesda, and Alexandria tend to start higher, especially when the schedule is demanding or there’s limited flexibility.

But what if it’s outside your budget?

Then it’s okay to explore other options, seriously. If full-time nanny care doesn’t align with your financial reality, that doesn’t make you a bad parent. It means you need to find a solution that works for your family right now.

There are so many great alternatives:

  • In-home daycares (often more affordable and still personal)

  • Preschool or part-time school programs

  • Nanny shares with another family

  • A mix of part-time nanny support and school

  • Our annual babysitting packages for occasional date nights or backup help

We understand that childcare is one of the biggest expenses for families in America, and it can feel impossible. But if you do decide to hire a nanny, it’s important to go into it with a clear understanding of what the market looks like, and what kind of care you're asking for.

Here’s what I want families to understand:

If you’re looking for someone who is experienced, dependable, and confident handling your child’s needs while you're working, then yes, that level of care has a cost, and it’s okay to talk about that openly.

We want families to pay fairly and legally, and we want nannies to be able to live comfortably while doing the work that allows other people to go to work, too.

You’re not just paying for time, you’re paying for peace of mind, for structure in your household, for someone to love and care for your children when you can’t be there. That’s worth paying well for.

If you ever need help figuring out what kind of care makes the most sense for your family (and your budget), Nannies in the City is always here to help. We’ll talk through your needs, your options, and what’s possible.

With love,

Chelsea Delaney Founder, Nannies in the City
